Senator H\u00e9bert and Mr. Danson both worked tirelessly to create an organization that would allow young Canadians to engage in meaningful community service and discover the richness of the country.<\/p>\n<p>In 1977, their idea became a reality, and Katimavik was born.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n                        \t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n[\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row full_width=&#8221;stretch_row&#8221; css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1773431238408{background-color: #175c2e !important;border-color: #175c2e !important;}&#8221;][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_separator css=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_separator css=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_separator css=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;1345&#8243; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #f2853d;\">Barney Danson<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Barney Danson (1921 \u2013 2011) was born and raised in Toronto. As a teenager he joined the Canadian Armed Forces, eventually rising to the rank of Lieutenant. In 1944 he fought and was injured during World War II in the Battle of Normandy.\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text]<div class=\"accordion accordion-flush \" id=\"accordeon-7\">\r\n    <div class=\"accordion-item \">\r\n    <h4 class=\"accordion-header\">\r\n        <button class=\"accordion-button collapsed\" type=\"button\" data-bs-toggle=\"collapse\" data-bs-target=\"#acc--item-8\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"acc--item-8\">\r\n            <span class=\"acc-titre\">(read more)<\/span>\r\n        <\/button>\r\n    <\/h4>\r\n    <div id=\"acc--item-8\" class=\"accordion-collapse collapse\" data-bs-parent=\"#accordion-\">\r\n        <div class=\"accordion-body\">\r\n            <p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">After returning home, Mr. Danson formed the Danson Corporation, a plastics company that would soon become immensely successful. In 1968 he was elected to the House of Commons for the first time, representing the Toronto riding of York North.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">In 1974 he was appointed as Minister of State for Urban Affairs by Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau. Two years later, he became the Minister of National Defence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Throughout his life, Mr. Danson\u2019s mission was to give back to the community, serving on numerous non-profit boards and councils, including the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, the Canadian War Museum, Ballet Opera House Corporation, and the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business.<\/span><\/p>        <\/div>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>[\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_separator css=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_separator css=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_separator css=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;950&#8243; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #f2853d;\">Jacques H\u00e9bert<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Jacques H\u00e9bert (1923 \u2013 2007) was born in Montr\u00e9al and studied at Saint Dunstan\u2019s University in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. Prior to his political career, he was a journalist and owned two publishing companies.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text]<div class=\"accordion accordion-flush \" id=\"accordeon-9\">\r\n    <div class=\"accordion-item \">\r\n    <h4 class=\"accordion-header\">\r\n        <button class=\"accordion-button collapsed\" type=\"button\" data-bs-toggle=\"collapse\" data-bs-target=\"#acc--item-10\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"acc--item-10\">\r\n            <span class=\"acc-titre\">(read more)<\/span>\r\n        <\/button>\r\n    <\/h4>\r\n    <div id=\"acc--item-10\" class=\"accordion-collapse collapse\" data-bs-parent=\"#accordion-\">\r\n        <div class=\"accordion-body\">\r\n            <\/p>\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\">\n<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Throughout his public life, Mr. H\u00e9bert mission was to give youth the skills, knowledge, and experience to play an active role in society.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">A year after Katimavik was created, Mr. H\u00e9bert was named an Officer of the Order of Canada. In 1983 he was appointed as a Canadian Senator, a position he held for 15 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">After co-founding the organization, Mr. H\u00e9bert remained involved in Katimavik throughout the rest of his life, serving as its Chair for a number of years. In 1986, he went on a 21-day hunger strike to protest the first attempt to dismantle the program by the newly-elected Government of the day. Funding was restored and Katimavik survived.
