Katimavik Participants ready to make an impact
across Canada

July 15, 2020 – This week, 66 young Canadians will embark on the journey of a lifetime as they begin their Katimavik National Experience. Katimavik, one of Canada’s leading youth empowerment organizations, has been running the National Experience program for the past 43 years, and currently has houses in Nanaimo, British Columbia; Calgary, Alberta; Winnipeg, Manitoba; Peterborough, Ontario; Quebec City, Quebec; and Moncton, New Brunswick.

For the next five months, Participants will volunteer with local organizations, gain practical skills, learn about Truth & Reconciliation, and form lifelong relationships and memories, all while strictly adhering to local, provincial, and national safety guidelines specific to COVID-19.

“During such a transformative period in the world’s history, youth development and engagement is more critical than ever,” said Katimavik Chief Executive Officer John-Frederick Cameron.

“We are so very proud of these Participants who have undertaken the Katimavik National Experience at a time when it is most needed. They are going to make an impact in their communities and be leaders during a defining global moment.”

As it has since 1977, Katimavik remains committed to empowering Canadian youth to achieve their full potential and build a better Canada, one community at a time.

Katimavik offers young adults opportunities to gain life skills and work experience while contributing to community development through volunteerism. The word ‘Katimavik’ originates from the Inuktitut language, meaning ‘meeting place’. Since 1977, Katimavik has brought young Canadians together to learn, to exchange culture and language, and to help build stronger communities across Canada. Katimavik aims to help youth become engaged, caring citizens and capable contributors and leaders for a better Canada. We do this through the development of 21st-century skills, experiential learning, and civic engagement.
